I’ve read sooo many good books this year and felt inspired to write a little post about one of my favorites.

Looking for a book that is low stakes cozy fantasy? Look no further than The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst.

I stumbled across this book while scrolling tiktok and thought it seemed cute. I’ve been reading a lot of mafia romance with more intense plots and was looking for something a bit lighter.

The Spellshop is about an extremely introverted librarian and her best friend who is a sentient spider plant, Caz. The book opens to the city where she currently lives being overthrown by a rebellion and the library where she works being burned down. She escapes to a small town on a boat with her best friend Caz with as many spell books from the library as she can manage.

You see her try to set up her new life her on this small island and how she navigates having to seek out help from others when all she wants is to remain at home with Caz and her books. As she is on the island she starts to discover that there are many issues with the weather and crops due to the misuse of magic in the capital. She realizes that Caz and herself have the ability to help with these issues by creating remedies from spell books…but she has to be careful due to strict laws against magic use. It’s the ultimate whimsical read, there are unicorns, mermaids, and forest spirits!

Yes, there is a romance, but it’s not the whole plot and no there is ~no spice~. Even if you’re an avid spicy reader, I wouldn’t count this book out. The love story is so cute and it has a great found family trope as well. If you’re looking for a cute easy read, I would definitely recommend checking it out!
